Summer: Saviours, Scents and Styles

Summer is finally gaining on us, and as we’re all working hard through exam period, we at SCAN Fashion & Beauty thought we would put a handy little guide to summer beauty together for you. Packed with tips and tricks, this guide will help you with summery makeup looks, what scents to choose, and skincare saviours.

Starting with skincare, it is super important over summer that you’re wearing, if you choose to, a foundation with SPF in the formula. The higher the SPF, the better the protection from UV rays. Although the sun can be good for your skin, it can also have damaging effects that can last a lifetime. So when you’re not wearing foundation, make sure to wear a good suncream with a decent SPF, and protection from UVA. Forever Living offer both a cream and a spray of suncream, called Aloe Sunscreen. The formula is silky smooth, water-resistant and moisturising. The cream version can also double up as an after-sun lotion, since it contains aloe vera.

Makeup-wise, I like to keep my face looking fresh over summer. I barely wear makeup on holiday, other than during the evenings and for meals out etc., so that I can get a even tan. But when I do, I opt for a foundation with SPF 30 and light coverage. Even if I’m not wearing foundation, I like to tint my cheeks with Benefit’s Posietint, and highlight my cheekbones and browbones with NYX’s Strobe Genius Illuminating Palette. I always do my eyebrows and have found Natural Collection’s Brow Kit to be my favourite, however Benefit’s mini version of Gimme Brow is the easiest to use out there, in my opinion.

During summer, I find that my lips are particularly affected by the sun. They become quite chapped and sore, so finding a good moisturising lip balm is always high on my agenda. With a refreshing cool-mint flavour, Forever Living’s Forever Sun Lips is a great holiday companion. It has SPF 30 and helps to block both UVA and UVB rays. Having personally used this product last summer, I would totally recommend it. it’s a blessing to the lips!

Not only do you want to look fresh over the summer, but you want to smell as fresh as a daisy! The following are my favourite scents perfect for both spring and summer, as well as every day of the year. Other than maybe on summer nights, a fresh, flowery scent is best, particularly while on holiday (if you don’t mind the odd wasp or two that is – if you do, steer clear of any kind of potent perfumes). Marc Jacobs Daisy is a firm-favourite over summertime, as it’s light but still potent enough for people to ask just what perfume it is that you’re wearing. Alternatively, especially if you’re looking for a student-budget-friendly option, New Look do a set of 6 rollerball perfumes that are the perfect size for even your smallest of handbags – they would probably even fit in your purse, or in your bra for a night out…tried and tested! All of them smell amazing but Devotion and Dusk are my top picks of the collection.

I’m always bothered about how my hair looks over summer. I am all for the boho, beach babe, salt-spray look as it’s effortless and perfect on holiday. But the salt, sun and sand combined make my hair unmanageable, and looking like I’ve been dragged through a bush backwards. So after a two-week holiday, I always go for a haircut to get rid of the dead, dry and damaged ends that I’m plagued by after too much sun. But on-the-beach hairstyles are always much needed, and I often compile a hoard of magazines for either the plane there, or the car journey and ferry, and spend the travelling time searching for fashion, beauty and hair looks for the holiday. My favourite look is a fishtail braid, either down the back, or to the side. Dutch or French braids are also sweet, and super handy for when you’re off to dip your toes in the water.

I hope this guide takes the pressure off your beauty regimes for this summer and that you have a fabulous time, whether you’re jetting off to a faraway land, or simply soaking up (hopefully) some of the British sunshine!
