Islamic Society to hold Awareness Week

Week Six sees the next annual Islamic Awareness Week at Lancaster University, which coincides with the tragic assassination of Malcolm X, a campaigner for the rights and awareness of Islamic values.

After last year’s success, Lancaster University’s Islamic Society will be host to many famous, scholarly, and respected speakers heading a range of talks from controversial topics such as women’s rights within Islam to the importance of the prophet in today’s society. Friday’s lecture will be given by the former French actress Myrriam Francois-Cerrah, who can be frequently seen debating on the BBC show ‘Big Questions.’

As well as lectures, the Islamic Society will be putting on an array of activities and interactions. This will include a free film screening of the animated feature, ‘Mohammed: The Last Prophet’ on the Wednesday, along with question-and-answer sessions where all queries and curiosities concerning Islam can be consolidated by an Islamic expert.

All of these talks will take place every day during Week Six at 6pm in Frankland Lecture Theatre and early attendance is recommended for the best seats. All events taking place will also be providing free food and drink refreshments after each talk.

President of the Islamic Society, Ayaz Khalid is excited by the prospect of even more success than last year and for future endeavours for the society.

“The Islamic Society at Lancaster has made huge strides forward over the past few years,” he said, “and we are continuing to see increasing numbers of people at our events which is really encouraging.

“I would definitely encourage everyone regardless of background or personal belief to engage with Islam Awareness Week as our guest speakers are highly qualified and happy to discuss a wide range of subject matters, no matter how controversial the topic.”

He also commented that it is “the youth who break down barriers between communities, and members of Lancaster University’s Islamic Society firmly believe that a clearer and unadulterated understanding of Islam can only be beneficial in our multicultural society and increasingly globalised world.”

There will be more information, posters and people circulating around campus during Week Six in regards to the different events. Alternatively, more in depth information can be found at: http://www.facebook.com/#!/LancsIsoc.
