I saw you pass by – a poem by Giuseppe Calamo

On this earth made of fire and wind

I saw you pass by

As well as all the other things that pass by

But unlike these

You paused for a moment on your path

And in doing so you stopped time

The stars were sparkling silently

The ocean was murmuring softly

That night, your lips were like

A frozen cross to which my thoughts

Nailed themselves and  in the morning

They were pouring with blood

But you pretended not to see

On the first of the paths you found

You began again to walk

Perhaps because it is your destiny

To pass by as well as all the other things that pass by

Giuseppe Calamo
